Lyon in the winter
LYON
France’s third-largest city, Lyon is celebrated as the country’s gastronomic capital and one of its most elegant cultural destinations. The city offers a rare harmony of Roman ruins, Renaissance Old Town, baroque squares, and contemporary architecture. Shaped by the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon is divided into distinct districts, each with its own character, making it both rich in history and easy to explore.
Getting There & Around
From Geneva, Lyon is an ideal short getaway, reachable in about two hours.
Once in the city, a 24- or 48-hour public transport pass is highly recommended, offering unlimited access to buses, trams, metro lines, and funiculars. While hop-on/hop-off buses exist, Lyon is best discovered on foot, especially in the historic center.
DAY 1 — History, Old Town & Christmas Atmosphere
Morning — Fourvière Hill & Vieux Lyon
Begin the day by taking the funicular up to Fourvière Hill, the spiritual and historical heart of Lyon. Visit the magnificent Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, renowned for its ornate interior and sweeping panoramic views over the city. On clear days, the Alps can be seen in the distance.
Nearby, you may briefly explore the Gallo-Roman Theaters, remains of ancient Lugdunum. The open layout allows for a short, flexible visit—ideal when traveling with a toddler.
Descend into Vieux Lyon, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe’s finest Renaissance districts. Wander its colorful streets, stop for a warm drink in a café, and admire:
- Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste
- Fresque des Lyonnais, a striking mural celebrating local historical figures
Exploring the hidden traboules (covered passageways once used by silk workers) feels like a gentle treasure hunt and can be done at your own pace.
Midday — Christmas Market at Place Carnot
Head to Place Carnot Christmas Market, open daily until December 24. This festive area is especially enjoyable with young children, thanks to:
- Gentle rides such as a small carousel or train
- Festive lights and decorations
- Kid-friendly treats like waffles and hot chocolate
Lunch can be enjoyed at the market stalls or in nearby brasseries offering warm indoor seating.
Afternoon — Aquarium du Grand Lyon
Spend the afternoon indoors at the Aquarium du Grand Lyon, a calm, stroller-friendly space perfect for winter. The colorful tanks and slow pace are engaging for toddlers and relaxing for parents, offering a welcome break from the cold.
Evening — Dinner & City Lights
Enjoy dinner at a traditional Lyonnais bouchon or cozy brasserie in the Presqu’île. Many are family-friendly and ideal for an early evening meal.
If energy and weather allow, take a gentle evening stroll through Place Bellecour, one of Europe’s largest squares, beautifully illuminated in December and full of festive ambiance, Fete des Lumieres (2025 Program | Fête des Lumières)
DAY 2 — Nature, Miniatures & Modern Lyon
Morning — Parc de la Tête d’Or
Start the day at Parc de la Tête d’Or, one of France’s largest urban parks. With wide, stroller-friendly paths, it’s perfect for families. Highlights include:
- Lyon Zoo, free and easy to visit
- Botanical Garden, ideal for a short, calm walk
- Porte des Enfants du Rhône, a child-oriented play area
Weather permitting, this is a wonderful place for the little one to move freely.
Lunch — Confluence District
Head south to the Confluence area, a modern district at the meeting point of the rivers. It offers:
- Indoor, casual restaurants
- Easy access for strollers
- A relaxed, contemporary atmosphere
Afternoon — Mini World Lyon
Visit Mini World Lyon, France’s largest animated miniature park. Its detailed scenes, moving trains, and soft lighting are enchanting for both adults and children, making it an excellent winter indoor activity.
Evening — Final Dinner in the City Centre
Return to central Lyon for a final cozy dinner. Choose a restaurant with early seating and a relaxed atmosphere to end the trip comfortably.
