Locarno in 2 days

I'd recommend visiting Locarno in August, blending the energy of the world-famous Film Festival with the city's unique Ticinese culture and breathtaking natural surroundings.

Day 1: Festival Life & Historic Locarno

Morning: Exploring the Old Town

  • Piazza Grande: Start your day in the heart of Locarno at Piazza Grande. Lined with beautiful old buildings and arcades, it's the center of the festival. Take in the atmosphere and explore the various information points and pop-up installations that are set up for the event.

  • Castello Visconteo: A short walk from the piazza, this medieval castle once belonged to the influential Visconti family of Milan. While most of it is in ruins, the Cortile (courtyard) is well-preserved and houses an archaeological museum.

  • Lakeside Promenade: Stroll along the shores of Lake Maggiore. The palm-fringed promenade is a beautiful place for a walk, and you can see ferries coming and going to other towns on the lake.

Lunch: Ticinese Flavors

  • Grotto Experience: For an authentic local meal, find a traditional grotto in or around Locarno. These rustic, traditional eateries often serve local Ticinese dishes like polenta and brasato (braised beef).

Afternoon: Sacred Views & Cable Cars

  • Madonna del Sasso: Take the funicular from Locarno up to the hilltop sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso. This important pilgrimage church offers stunning, panoramic views of Locarno, the lake, and the surrounding mountains.

  • Cardada Cimetta: For an even more spectacular view, continue your journey by taking the cable car from Orselina (next to Madonna del Sasso) up to Cardada. From here, you can take a chairlift to Cimetta. At 1,670 meters, the viewing platform offers a unique perspective where you can see both the highest (Dufourspitze) and lowest (Lake Maggiore) points in Switzerland.

Evening: Piazza Grande Screening

  • Festival Screening: The main event of the day is the evening open-air screening on Piazza Grande. Get there early to find a good seat. A regular ticket for a Piazza Grande screening is around CHF 30-35. The atmosphere is incredible, with thousands of people watching a film on one of the largest open-air screens in Europe.

Day 2: Nature & Adventure

Morning: The Emerald River

  • Verzasca Valley: Take a bus from Locarno's train station (the Line 321 PostBus is a good option) to the Verzasca Valley. The journey takes about 40 minutes.

  • Ponte dei Salti: Your destination should be Lavertezzo, famous for its iconic double-arched Roman bridge, the Ponte dei Salti, and the crystal-clear, emerald green waters of the Verzasca River. This is a perfect spot for photos and a walk along the riverbanks.

Lunch: Rustic Dining

  • Riverside Picnic or Grotto: You can either pack a picnic to enjoy by the river or find a grotto in one of the charming villages in the valley, such as Sonogno.

Afternoon: Lake Maggiore Cruise

  • Boat Trip: Head back to Locarno and take a boat trip on Lake Maggiore. You can either do a short sightseeing cruise or take a ferry to a nearby destination. The Brissago Islands are a popular choice, famous for their unique botanical garden and serene atmosphere.

Evening: Farewell Dinner

  • Dinner in Locarno: Enjoy a final dinner at one of the city's many restaurants. You could choose a place on the lakefront for beautiful views or find a cozy spot in the old town.

  • Festival Film: If you have the energy, you can catch another film from the festival's program. There are many indoor screenings during the day and evening in various cinemas around the city, showcasing a wide range of international films.
