Two-Day Itinerary for Vienna

Vienna is a city of imperial grandeur, world-class art, and a vibrant coffeehouse culture. This two-day itinerary is designed to give you a comprehensive taste of its historic highlights, from magnificent palaces to iconic cathedrals.

Day 1: Imperial Vienna & The Historic Center

Morning: Schönbrunn Palace Start your day at Schönbrunn Palace, the former imperial summer residence of the Habsburgs. It's a bit outside the city center, so it's best to go in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds.

  • Take the "Imperial Tour" to see the State Rooms and the private apartments of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sisi.

  • After the palace tour, spend time wandering through the sprawling Schönbrunn Gardens. Make sure to walk up to the Gloriette, a beautiful arch on a hill that offers a spectacular panoramic view of the palace and the city.

  • The palace is open daily, but hours vary by season. It's best to book your ticket online in advance to skip the line.

Afternoon: Belvedere Palace Head back towards the city center to visit the Belvedere Palace, which is a magnificent Baroque complex consisting of two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere.

  • The Upper Belvedere is a world-renowned art museum, most famous for housing the world's largest collection of Austrian art, including Gustav Klimt's masterpiece, The Kiss.

  • After exploring the art, take a leisurely stroll through the perfectly manicured palace gardens, which offer a beautiful view of the Upper Belvedere.

Evening: Music & Culinary Delights Vienna is the "City of Music," and no visit is complete without experiencing its classical heritage.

  • Enjoy a traditional Viennese dinner at a restaurant specializing in local cuisine, such as Wiener Schnitzel or Tafelspitz.

  • Conclude your day with a classical music concert. There are many options, from full-scale opera performances at the Vienna State Opera to more intimate concerts featuring Mozart and Strauss at venues like the Musikverein or the Schönbrunn Palace Orangery.

Day 2: The Inner City & Coffeehouse Culture

Morning: Hofburg Palace & St. Stephen's Cathedral Begin your second day in the heart of Vienna at the Hofburg Palace, the former imperial winter residence. This vast complex served as the center of the Habsburg empire for centuries.

  • A combined ticket usually grants access to the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum (dedicated to the life of Empress Elisabeth), and the Imperial Silver Collection.

  • Nearby, you'll find the Spanish Riding School, famous for its Lipizzaner horses. You can attend a morning exercise session or a public performance.

  • From Hofburg, take a short walk to St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), Vienna's most important Gothic building. Climb the South Tower for a breathtaking view of the city's rooftops.

Afternoon: Museums & Coffeehouses After a busy morning, it's time for some authentic Viennese culture.

  • Head to one of Vienna's legendary coffeehouses, such as Café Central or Café Sacher, for a coffee and a slice of Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel.

  • Next, explore one of the many museums in the Innere Stadt. The Albertina is a popular choice for its graphic arts collection and magnificent State Rooms. Alternatively, visit the MuseumsQuartier, a vibrant complex of modern art museums and cultural spaces.

Evening: Exploring The Ringstrasse Spend your last evening walking along the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard that encircles the Inner City.

  • Admire the stunning architecture, including the Vienna State Opera, the Austrian Parliament Building, the City Hall (Rathaus), and the Burgtheater.

  • Enjoy a final dinner in one of the city's many diverse neighborhoods, perhaps exploring the vibrant atmosphere of the Naschmarkt food stalls.
