Montreux

Montreux is a classic resort town on the shores of Lake Geneva. Tucked between steep hills and the water, it's famous for its mild climate and, of course, the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival held every July. The town's promenade is a beautiful stroll, lined with flowers, sculptures, and Mediterranean trees alongside grand Belle Époque buildings. Just offshore, you'll find the medieval Château de Chillon, a spectacular island castle with ramparts and halls featuring 14th-century murals.

A Haven for Music Legends

The Montreux Jazz Festival, which started in 1967, has grown into a major international event, attracting some of the greatest names in jazz, blues, rock, and soul.

Rock fans will love the town's connection to Deep Purple and their legendary song, "Smoke on the Water." The song was inspired by a fire that broke out at the Montreux Casino during a Frank Zappa concert in 1971. As the casino burned, a pall of smoke drifted over Lake Geneva, inspiring the band to write their famous hit.

The town's link to music legends doesn't stop there. Freddie Mercury and the band Queen were captivated by Montreux. They recorded seven albums at the Mountain Studios, a space they owned from 1979 to 1993. You can explore this history at the Queen: The Studio Experience, a free exhibit located inside the Montreux Casino. This lovingly preserved studio is filled with handwritten lyrics and instruments, giving you a strong sense of the band's work and their deep connection to the town. The exhibit is highly interactive, allowing you to mix tracks and even sign the studio wall. The list of other artists who have recorded here is a testament to its legacy—including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and the Rolling Stones.

Montreux's Natural Beauty

Montreux's mild microclimate has earned it the nickname "the capital of the Vaud Riviera." Plants typically found in the Mediterranean, like palms and cypresses, thrive here. This pleasant climate has also attracted many other famous residents over the years, including Charlie Chaplin. You can find many charming restaurants along the lake, perfect for a relaxing meal.
